Welcome to the home page for Kenneth E. Kendall. Ken is a Distinguished Professor of Management at Rutgers University, School of Business-Camden, in New Jersey, USA. Ken researches and teaches in the areas of ecommerce, emerging technologies, systems analysis and design, and project management for information technology. Ken is currently the President of the Decision Sciences Institute (DSI). One of Ken's key achievements was that he helped to found the International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS), which now attracts more than a thousand information systems researchers to its conference annually. Another achievement was being named as a Fellow for the Decision Sciences Institute.
Professor Kendall has published over 85 research articles, a leading textbook, Systems Analysis and Design, (seventh edition, 2008); Project Planning and Requirements Analysis for IT Systems Development, (second edition, 2002) and two edited research volumes on emerging information technologies and systems development. He has published numerous times in journals such as MIS Quarterly (2 papers), Management Science (3 papers), Decision Sciences (3 papers), and Operations Research. He has worked with more than 39 co-authors over the course of his career. Ken's Systems Analysis and Design text has recently been translated into Chinese, Spanish, and Indonesian.

In 1995, Dr. Kendall was awarded the Silver Core by IFIP (the International Federation for Information Processing) and in 2001 he became a Fellow of the Decision Sciences Institute. Additionally, he was listed as one of the top 60 researchers in MIS in an article published in Socio Economic Planning Sciences (Vol. 25, No. 3, 1991). This study counted the number of times an author published in the top MIS journals in the 1980s.
From the beginning of his career, Ken decided that he wanted to work with organizations that benefit society. Consequently, he worked with the American Red Cross and other blood centers throughout the world to help ensure a safe and plentiful supply of blood. He has helped the Nebraska State Patrol, worked with educational institutions, and a variety of non-profit groups including theatres and religious organizations in order to create a better community. He served for three years as chair of IFIP WG 8.2 an organization that encourages research on the impacts of information systems on organizations and society.
Over the last decade, Dr. Kendall’s research has turned towards ecommerce. In particular, Ken has been researching Web-based push and pull technologies. An article on “Information Delivery Systems: An Exploration of Web Push and Pull Technologies,” has appeared in Communications of AIS. Ken is also active in researching agile systems development as part of his ongoing interest in developing new methods for systems analysis and design.
In addition to conducting basic and applied research, Ken has made contributions to the advancement of pedagogy. Some of his pedagogical research, “An Empirical Comparison of a Hypertext-based Systems Analysis Case with Conventional Cases and Role Playing,” appeared in The DATA BASE for Advances in Information Systems. Ken is a co-creator of the instructional software tool, HyperCase®, an interactive, adventure game used to train systems analysts.
Ken’s recent teaching portfolio includes two ecommerce courses; one is entitled “Emerging Information Technologies” and the other is called “Ecommerce Project Management.” Both are offered on the graduate and undergraduate level. Ken enjoys introducing state-of-the-art software packages in class, and he is a beta tester for many new ecommerce products.
Ken received a Decision Sciences Institute Innovative Teaching Award, Honorable Mention in 1992. Ken has been a member of the Advisory Board for the Teaching Excellence Center, Rutgers University-Camden, 1992 to 2003.
Ken has also supervised 8 doctoral dissertations in MIS and is currently active on doctoral committees. Ken has taken an energetic role in mentoring doctoral students. In 2003, he served as co-coordinator for the Decision Sciences Institute Doctoral Student Consortium in Washington, D.C. He has been a coordinator and mentor, for the Decision Sciences Institute Doctoral Student Consortium, Workshop on Formulating a Strategic Research Plan nine times since 1995.
He has participated with minority students and faculty in the Ph.D. Project Information Systems Doctoral Students Association Conference, begun by the KPMG Foundation, as a presenter and mentor for the last several years. In 2001 he was privileged to be named to the Ph.D. Project’s Circle of Compadres. Ken served as a Co-Director of the MIS Camp for New MIS Faculty Development, Americas Conference on Information Systems for three years and once as Co-Director of the ICIS Junior Faculty Consortium.
At Rutgers University, he has twice presented an original workshop for faculty “Getting Work Published,” in the Helping Faculty to Succeed Series at the Teaching Excellence Center.
